Three very similar words, three completely different meanings.
Indian classical dance can be categorized into three main elements. Contrary to what many believe, these elements are not interchangeable and are characterized by their own attributes.
NATYA
Natyam Tham Natakam Chaiva Poojyam Poorvakathayutham
Abhinaya, or dramatic representation of a story and evokes rasa, or reaction from the spectator, from bhava, or psychological states.
NRITTA
Rasa Bhaavaviheenaanthu Nrittamityabhidiyate
Pure dance which tells no story but focuses in rhythmic patterns and sequences. Completely devoid of bhava or rasa and only includes movement of the angas, or limbs.
NRITHYA
Rasabhavavyanjanaadiyuktham Nruthyamithiryathe
Blend of both expression and footwork, commonly used to narrate a story. A combination of natya and nritta. Every word is enacted, more often known as interpretive dance. Includes rasa, bhava, and abhinaya.
Any skilled dancer understands the similarities and differences between the three elements and utilizes the perfect blend of body movements and facial expressions in their presentations.
